Local Right Programme

Fahimta Women and Youth Development Initiative (FAWOYDI), is a nongovernmental, nonprofit making, non religious organization. Established and registered with CAC in 2005. In 2006, Actionaid Nigeria selected FAWOYDI for the LRP Programme this was as a result of ending poverty in vulnerable states in Nigeria as revealed in an appraisal conducted which Bauchi State was among the selected States. FAWOYDI under the Actionaid programme are collaborating and implementing programme in 10 communities (Gobbiya, Mbal, Gizaki, Dambar, Unguwan Rimi, Tubule, Sindigawo, Garin Dankwa, Kwagal and Lomin Fulani) of 2 LGAs (Bogoro and Kirfi) until 2017.

FAWOYDI is focusing on 2 major thematic areas which include Right to Education and Food, while other thematic such as Right to Just Democratic Governance, women´s right, health, and Human security are cross cutting for the LRP.

Community 1 (Bogoro LGA)
Bogoro LGA is one of the LGAs created on the 1st October 1996 out of Tafawa Balewa LGA and with it headquarters in Bogoro. It has an estimated population of over 140,000 according to projected figure and a land mass of 985.59sq km. The LGA has 13 electoral wards and only one district (Bogoro) and about three village Areas (Bogoro, Boi and Lusa). The LGA is situated at the Southern part of Bauchi State and bounded to the South with Kanke LGA in Plateau State.

The major tribes found in the LGA include Sayawa, Jarawa, Angas, Hausa, Fulani, and Boyawa among others. The rainfall in Bogoro starts from April and terminates around October every year. The major occupation of the people is farming and some of the farm products are Maize, Guinea corn, Groundnuts, Acha, Beans, Soya Beans and Rice.

The local government has been blessed with natural resources such as Tin, Quartz, Timalin, Kaolin, to mention but a few yet untapped and potential sources of employment for the youths.

Community 2 (Kirfi LGA)
Kirfi Local government was created in 1996 out of the present Alkaleri Local government during the regime of late general Sani Abacha. The local government is bordered with Gombe state from the east and has Kirfi, Badara, Dewu, Bara, Wanka, Tubule, Lariski and Cheledi amongst prominent villages and had many personalities at the helm of affairs from its inception to date. Kirfi LGA has an approximate population of 143,000.

The word Kirfi is unique: no any other place in the entire map of the world bears such name. The history of Kirfi is full of praises, their people have substance, their soil rich and fertile, and deep down the crust you find lots of mineral deposits.

The rainfall in Bogoro starts from April and terminates around October every year. The major occupation of the people is farming and some of the farm products include water melon, tomatoes, animal husbandry rearing, to boast economic activities in the area.

In the two LGAs across the 10 LRP communities, there is an established traditional governance structure and regardless of religious affiliations with similar hierarchy as follows: Sarki, waziri, Madaki, Galadima, Chiroma, Yarima, Garkuwa, Mai Ungwa, Marafa, Danburam and wambai. These constitute the traditional council.

Population
Across the 10 LRP communities, women constitute 60% of the total population and by and large dominated by the youth followed by the children and the least being the aged. The average population is between 1000-4,000 and 5,000-10,000. The aged constitute 20% of the population while the youth constitute 50%. Next to the youth in population across the communities are children, who are 30% of the total population.

Purpose of Visit
The purpose is to campaign and lobby against the root causes of poverty, to try to ensure that poor people are treated fairly by governments, companies and international institutions whose decisions affect these people´s everyday lives and their basic human rights. FAWOYDI through ActionAid works in partnership with communities on practical projects aiming to improve the opportunities for these communities and provide them with facilities such as wells, water systems, schools and health centres in order to tackle the causes of poverty.

Project Mission The project mission is to work with poor and excluded people to eradicate poverty and injustice.

Target Group
The project focuses 10 communities of Kirfi and Bogoro Local Government Areas in Bauchi State. These are: 1) Kwagal, 2) Dankwa, 3) Lomin Fulani, 4) Tubule, 5) Unguwan Rimi, 6) Sindigawo, 7) Gizaki 8) Mbal, 9) Gobiya and 10) Dambar

Target groups are men, women, youths and children from the poor and excluded communities but with more emphasis on women and children. The selection of the communities and the target groups was on informed basis and included the following criteria: near absence of government intervention in the communities, indices of poverty level expressed in terms of poor or lack of access to some set of basic needs such as health, education, water services and other social services. Other issues include powerlessness, isolation, vulnerability and social exclusion.

In the 2 LGAs, near government absence exist characterized by low financial allocation from federation account, poor internally generated revenue. Specific issues to health include high maternal and under morbidity and mortality, while education issues included low girl child school enrolment, and retention in primary school, and poor transition to Junior Secondary School (JSS).

The project is targeting to see a society free from poverty ensuring that the communities are able to enjoy the social amenities of lives such as access to good hospital, access to quality education for the children, good and portable water for drinking and building an economic socio community. The community sponsorship as improved the children educational skills.

Model Strategies

The strategy used is the human rights–based approach ensuring that the communities are able to participate directly and indirectly to ensure the project success. This method ensures awareness and consciousness raising, political and encouragement of participation of poor and excluded groups, promoting democracy and holding governments accountable. Another strategy was the community sponsorship which was used to develop the children skills in educational activities.
